Operating a driverless train is something Rio Tinto (mining company) are betting on in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, with its AutoHaul system which is claimed to be world's first fully-autonomous long distance rail.
One of the trains has completed almost 100 kilometre (62 miles) pilot run without a driver on board and the trip was supervised in real-time by Rio Tinto teams and rail safety authorities.
